How To Throw A Frozen Themed Birthday Party
Frozen Party Decorating Ideas
If you need some Frozen Party Decorating Ideas, then you've come to the right place...
Recently, my niece's Birthday party(she turned 4) was coming up and she really loves the movie, "Frozen." At first, my Mom was just going to have a basic party but, I stepped in and said let's go all in! or all out! and really make it something special... let's have her be totally immersed in the movie & the whole atmosphere of it.
We kept coming up with more and more, and even more great ideas! - one right after the other!
"Let's decorate this!" "Yeah, and we could do that too!"
It was only about a week and a 1/2 before the party...Yikes!
We had to really get things moving and ultimately, we weren't able to incorporate everything we wanted & envisioned, but it totally(without a doubt!) far exceeded our wildest dreams & expectations, and all within our limited time frame :o)
All the pictures on this page were taken by us & we really hope you enjoy seeing what we put together. Also, I really think you'll take away some absolutely beautiful decorating ideas that you can use for a Frozen themed party of your own - whether it's a Birthday, or just a party in general - Make it shine!
The Frozen Phenomenon
As soon as the movie "Frozen" came out, it was all the buzz. Everyone kept talking about how great it is and the soundtrack. I'm a huge fan of movies(chances are if you name one, I've seen it). I thoroughly enjoy animated movies and have ever since I was a kid... which is why I really liked Frozen too.
I grew up on some great cartoons, like Warner Bros.; i.e., Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck. As well as, all the Disney movies like Peter Pan, Beauty & The Beast, All Dogs To Heaven etc.(The list goes on and on) We owned them all on VHS.(I'm not that old, lol age is a state of mind.) I highly recommend that you get those older movies, they're classics, for your kids to see if you don't have them already.
To be able to put together a Frozen themed party, it helps to see the movie - which I'm sure you've already seen, or heard, over and over because kids like to re-watch movies over and over.
The main elements, to use for decorating, are ice & snow(basically, cold weather & winter), with specific colors like we used - blue and white. Don't forget the princess theme! (You can use other colors if you want, like purple or green. The best thing about the Frozen theme is that you can use Christmas items like trees or wreaths - as you'll see on this page, in the pictures we took of the decorations.
As far as the movie goes, I'm sure they'll make a sequel because there are so many different things they could do, like the origins of Elsa's ice curse(or blessing) and have a bad guy or witch with fire powers or even a bf(a love interest) for Elsa, with fire powers. Maybe Anna could get the Ice powers too from Elsa, so they both have it. Or she could get fire, if they have a sibling rivalry lol
Ok, let's get started with the decorating ideas... :oP

How To Make Your Very Own Frozen Castle
I completely made that Frozen castle you see up top, from scratch. It's not an exact replica, but it has the blue roofs and stone colored walls like the one in the movie.
Believe it or not, it took me over 19 hours to make! Yeah that's crazy but it's true! Most of the time was spent getting everything cut just right and waiting for glue to dry.
The items I used:
Cardboard
I used cardboard for the entire frame of the castle, even the columns...which were hard to put together with glue so I had to use the next item...
Stapler/Staple Gun
The staple gun we own can be used as a staple gun or you can attach the optional stapler piece that comes with it, to use it as a plain old desktop stapler. That worked the best for attaching the columns to the castle frame.
Glue (Glue sticks & Elmer's type regular white liquid glue)
Glue was used for everything else. Putting the glitter paper on the cardboard and making it stick, yada yada yada... I used up so many glue sticks!
Special Glitter Paper!
My mom was at a Dollar Store, looking for cool things we could use for the party and she came across a woman who was talking to herself,(I guess as long as we don't answer ourselves we aren't crazy! lol) In her hands were some packages of glitter paper that caught her eye. So, my mom checked the shelf and found about 5 packages of blue and 2 silver(each packet comes with 3 sheets of paper). What a great buy! I thought I was going to have to use plain white printer paper - glue it then sprinkle glitter on it. What a time saver!
Scissors & A Box Cutter
I used scissors for cutting paper and sometimes cardboard, but the box cutter was used mostly for cardboard.
Duct Tape & Packing Tape
I used Duct tape, or should I say, I used Packing tape to keep the cardboard castle frame together for certain parts. I don't know what's happened to Duct Tape recently but none of it works like it used to. Basically, we put duct tape on something and then a little while later it comes loose - it won't keep its stick. I've even tried wiping the object down in case of dust but nope, it still won't work.
We've tried different brands - name brands and other brands from different stores - and none of them seem to stick like they used to. I wonder if companies are accidentally using a bad batch of chemicals when they make their duct tape or maybe they are doing it on purpose to save money and don't care about the quality or the consumer. Duct tape only seemed to stop working altogether back in early to mid 2014. It worked fine before then and has yet to be as good as it once was. Thank goodness packing tape still works!
*Please leave me a comment in the comments section(at the end of this page) if you've been having problems with duct tape or haven't. I need to know if it's just my area's tape etc.
Please answer this next poll...

Next Up... A Unique, One Of A Kind Creation...
My Mom came up with a very cool idea!
She planned on having it for just a Winter piece, before we even went crazy with Frozen decorating.
We both put it together... whattaya think?...
Put In A Close Up Of The Glittered branch Photo
A Branch/Stick Decorating Idea
It's a work of art! It's sticks from a tree that my mom spray painted white/silver and then after they dried she sprayed them with a can of glitter spray paint. It was glistening nicely, but a little too subtle, so she pulled out a container of glitter glue and using her fingers, she wiped it on the tree branches. We checked about using some foam brushes we had, but it wouldn't leave the foam. The foam was stealing all the glitter and not sharing!
Also, to point out(for a helpful tip, to make it easier), she put the glue glitter on the branches last, after I built a cardboard box, filled it with rocks and after we artistically & strategically placed the sticks into the box by cutting holes, in the form of slits, with a box cutter to slide them in, nice & snug.
Then we got some fake snow, particularly Buffalo Snow, and place it around the base of the sticks. Which is probably the best fake snow there is. It's like cotton or polyester. It's also the same snow we used, to put on the castle to make it look snowed over, like from the movie, when Elsa can't control her powers and runs away into the woods to build her own ice castle.
Then we ran some blue Christmas lights through the snow.
Is it just us, or do the lights look more like green - seafoam green or mint green etc.?

Going right along with the blue & white theme, a white Christmas tree works perfectly! We added two blue strands of Christmas lights to it and presto! ~
We had another white tree we were going to use because the lights on it didn't work. We were going to cut the lights off and just put blue ones on it but, the tree was sun damaged and the white had turned yellow! :M The reason for that is... well, one year we put all our Christmas decorations away, all except for one white tree, we just wanted to have it up all year round and it was placed in front of a window that the Summer Sun shines through. That's a helpful hint for sure, but I don't think you have to worry about the Winter Sun damaging a white tree, because it's not as powerful as the Summer Sun.
We also added some Buffalo Snow to the bottom of the tree to make it look more like the snow theme. The lights that came with that white tree are multi-colored but they don't cause that much of a viewing problem or eyesore for our party theme, we just put the blue on anyway, which looks green btw :>)
Decorating The Table With A Frozen Theme
I wanted to make the entire room as blue & white as possible, for the whole Frozen theme. I think it turned out fantastic!
A white tablecloth with a blue one folded for the runner. The blue tablecloth(*cough "bedsheet") was a last minute buy and Yes, it's actually a bed sheet lol. We bought a set of new sheets because we didn't have a blue tablecloth. So after we're done using it for the table we can use it on someone's bed that needs it.
That beautiful doll on the table isn't an actual Frozen item, it's one of the many, many, many, many, many dolls my mom has in her collection(I think that was enough many's to write hehe). I thought she looked perfect to add to the mix and I'm glad, because it needed that something more.
To decorate the table with more blue and white, for Frozen, we grabbed some white vases we had and put in some white flowers & silver flowers. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any blue flowers at the store but we thankfully we had the other idea for blue candles, which worked out perfectly.
We also sprinkled snow Buffalo Snow Snowflakes on the blue runner(you know... the bed sheet lol). Which is different than the regular snow I talked about earlier. The snow from earlier is like a giant piece of cotton or polyester whereas the snowflakes are sprinkles of snow with special almost glittered pieces.

Dressing Up The Chairs
The table and chairs we have in our dining room are really cool. They make me think of King Arthur & his knights if they had an almost rectangular shaped table in place of their round table. The backs of the chairs almost look like shields, as does the table, but you can't tell with the table cloth on it, in these pictures.
What I wanted to do, for my niece Skyler's Birthday Party, was to dress them up a bit and make them more princess-y and to make them meld with the Frozen theme with blue & white.
As you can see by the pictures, my Mom & I tied blue ribbons to the backs of each chair.
Originally, I had planned on putting ribbons on the chairs(more than one) but I also wanted to dress up the tops and bottoms with white fabric, but we didn't have any we could use because the ones I wanted to use, my mom wanted to use for something else, as a constant fabric placement on her vanity.
In other words, we had fabric, but it was going to have to be cut up to fit each chair and it would've ruined it for her project.
The picture to the right and the one down bottom, is a rough copy of how I wanted it to look, for the bottom. I wanted the top of the chair to be dressed up too, somehow, but never figured out how I wanted it since we couldn't do it anyway. I think it would've been pretty though.
Fancy Dress Chairs
Click thumbnail to view full-sizeThe fabric bows on the bottom would've need some primping to make them stronger looking, maybe some starch. My Mom also pointed out, that if you make the bow loops shorter they would stand up better for that fabric, because, as you can see they drooped with that fabric I used for the rough copy.
If I put fabric on top it was either going to be the same as the bottom or maybe more of a sheer to give it a different look for the top and bottom, otherwise it could overdo the look.
All in all, I think the chairs came out splendidly with just the single bow on each...
Setting The Table - Frozen Plates & Dinnerware
With only a few days left before my Niece's 4th Birthday Party, we were fortunate enough to find a lot of Frozen merchandise, including plates, cups & utensils.
I set up the table to see what it would look like with all the great swag...
My mom also found those blue snowflake drink containers, they're not associated with the movie Frozen, but they went perfectly with our blue & white, snowy Winter theme. We ended up giving one to each of the kids in a gift bag filled with other goodies, including a package of each of those utensils and fruit snacks.
We also used our very own snowflake utensils that we already owned, for both the kids and adults, just in case they needed more sturdiness - if the Frozen plasticware utensils couldn't manage.
To see the snowflake utensils, they're in the next photos(the last thumbnail)...
Making It Extra Special!
When we bought the Frozen items at the store, primarily the plates and cups etc., we were only able to find one plastic, light purple plate and so we used that for the Birthday girl's place setting, so she stood out from everyone else's place setting.
A Classy Frozen Party Idea
We also thought about using more blue items like Blue Cloth Napkins. Since we already had some actual Frozen Paper Napkins we didn't need to use the blue cloth ones.
I think the blue cloth napkins would've looked cool though and are a great decorating idea for a Frozen themed party. I think they would've made everything look more classy or formal but I don't think they would've taken it away from being a kids party. Everything looks adult like but I think that just means it looks high quality, not necessarily, adult looking more than a kids party. I think we did an amazing job and everything came out stellar!
*We have 2 different types of the blue napkins(pictured below). I think I would've used the ones with frilly edges as place mats and the ones without, as actual napkins and would've put silver napkin rings on them.
Giving A Frozen Gift Bag
It's always a nice idea to give out giftbags to people who show up at your party. We found these cute little Snowman bags(Olaf was the thinking), felt material type, that we could give to each of the kids as a gift bag.
We filled each Frozen gift bag with:
A snowflake cup w/ some Hershey's Kisses inside,
some pouches of Frozen themed fruit snacks,
a package of those plastic Frozen utensils,
Olaf Lollipops...
Olaf's Summer Song Sing Along
"In Summer!!!"

Another great idea we had, going along with the white Christmas tree, was for a white wreath tied up with ribbon, to a beautiful mirror in the room. That's the same ribbon we used for the bows on the chairs... we had a few rolls of it.
Filling Out The Room With Frozen Pictures...
In order to make the room feel more like it was a Frozen theme, as opposed to just Winter, we used some Frozen pictures that we cut out of a calendar. We were originally going to give Skyler a Frozen Calendar but we already had a different calendar to give her and we could have easily picked up another one.
So I cut out the pictures and placed them in key areas around the room... check out the thumbnail gallery below to see them all :o)

Snowflakes Everywhere!
Now, I'm sure you've been wondering about them, and have seen them a lot, throughout the Frozen decorating photos on this page...
The Snowflakes!...
the wait is over...
Decorating Your Ceilings With Snowflakes!
My Mom came up with the idea to decorate the ceiling with snowflakes, but she never envisioned it being as much as I put up. It turned out So Amazing!
Believe it or not, I spent at least 4 hours putting up the snowflakes in the Dining Room!
But I didn't stop there... I put them on the kitchen ceiling, as well as the front hallway that connects the dining room to the living room. The dining room leads to the kitchen so it's basically 3 rooms connected, that are full of snowflakes on the ceilings. :o)))
It took me 4 hours more to do the hallway and kitchen, so that's a total of at least 8 hours to put up all the snowflakes.
All in all, I used 114 snowflakes. Yup! That's One Hundred and Fourteen Snowflakes!
How To Decorate Your Ceiling With Snowflakes
I surprised my Mom by putting up all the snowflakes overnight, so she could wake up to them :D
They are so easy to put up, as long as you have the time and the up and down the ladder endurance ability. After doing the dining room first, for the 4 hours, the next day I was so sore! (I think it was because I hopped off the dining room chairs wrong, a few times) I wasn't as sore after the 2nd time, when I put up the rest of the rooms(the kitchen & the front hallway)
Ok, so, to do this project... you need:
Snowflake Ornaments
There are different size snowflakes as well as different colors. I used clear & white snowflakes for the colors. As for sizes, we had three of them, small, medium and extra large. We even had some snowflakes that were fuzzy... fuzzy with tinsel type quality, but not full on tinsel.
Scissors
You need the scissors for two things. To cut the ornament rope that comes attached to each single snowflake. Then you need to use the scissors for the next item...
Fishing Line
You need to tie the fishing line to the part of the snowflake you want to hang it from and then double knot it. Then hold the snowflake up by the fishing line, while it's still attached to the reel and climb up the ladder or on a chair to reach the ceiling to see how long you need it.(also, be sure and think about people bumping their heads into them, are there any tall people in your family. I made sure my snowflakes were high up enough so that my tall brother wouldn't hit any of them)
After you measure how far you need it up, hold your hand on that spot and go back down the ladder, or off the chair, and then cut it there with the scissors. Next...
Push Pin Thumbtacks
Next, you tie the fishing line end that you just cut, in a knot, without closing the knot and then tie it to the sharp point of a push pin thumbtack(closing the knot) and then...
A Ladder or Chair
(I prefer the ladder - it's used to heavy duty usage... up and down - a chair could break after too much up & down)Climb the ladder with your snowflake that's ready to be hung up and push the pin into the ceiling, but also keep in mind what angle you want the snowflake to face, for you or other people to see it.(I strategically faced all the snowflakes to face where they should be)
Time
And that's it, keep repeating that process over and over, making different lengths of the fishing line and by alternating the different snowflakes so they're not all grouped together.(unless you end up just using one main color or type of snowflake)
It's going to take some time to put them all up, with all the putting on the fishing line, measuring, deciding on which ones go where and how you want them facing. It took me at least 8 hours to put 114 of them up, using 118 thumbtacks, because on the extra large, big snowflakes I held them up with 2 thumbtacks each so they wouldn't fall out.(they might not fall out with just 1, but I didn't want to risk it and have them break)
Frozen Themed Cake
Making Your Own Frozen Themed Cake
Instead of paying a small fortune for a specially made Frozen cake, we just ordered a basic blue & white cake to fit our theme... My brother and his wife bought the Birthday Girl, Skyler, a book about Frozen and in the back of the book there were figurines for each character, so we just opened it up and put them on the cake. Voila!
Frozen Figurines

Skyler received a lot of gifts, not just frozen items. We didn't have any of the movie's wrapping paper on hand, so we used another Disney character's brand - Cinderella. you can't wrong with that wrapping paper because it matches the color themes and of course, the Princess theme.
The Birthday Girl Arrives!
We had our cameras and camcorders ready, to capture her happy surprise for when she walked in the door and saw how beautiful everything was for her special day. She was turning 4, and if you ask any parent, time flies, enjoy these moments!
Needless to say, she was SO happy and excited about everything - everything we set up and of course! the cake and presents! :P
Dressed & Ready For The Party
Party Time!
The party & the decorating were a success & everything was a hit!
She had a blast! Lots of laughs, presents and cake!
By the next morning, most of her presents were in disarray on the floor, so I put them all in front of the tree so that way when she got up, she could enjoy seeing them and grab them easily, to play with them. Sure enough, an hour after getting up she was playing with the dolls and singing songs from Frozen, she was singing the exact song that Anna sings to Elsa's door, asking where she is and if she wants to play... <3
Patting ourselves on the back
With only a week and a half until the party, my Mom & I were able to get all the decorating done. We loved how it turned out and so did everyone else! I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the ideas... Eventually, I'll add some more photos & ideas to this page, that I wasn't able to put in right away - there are a lot on this page already, but yeah, I still have more photos to go through, that I haven't added yet...
Please leave a comment down below and tell us what you thought of everything :o)
oh! and don't forget to let me know about the duct tape - if you've bought any in the past 6 months and have used any from that roll. I'm curious if anyone else is having problems with duct tape not working anymore, not sticking...
Thought I'd close it out with this picture my mom took. I really like how it's just getting dark outside, but still blue and the candles are lit, as well as the tree.
It almost reminds me of the movie Frozen... like the tree lit up is the ice castle Elsa builds on the mountain, and the castle I made is in the dark, covered in ice & snow like in the movie, at nighttime it's in the dark, and the candles are the people heading to Elsa's ice castle... Anna, Kristoff and Sven & another group of men to check on Anna after the horse she was riding(the evil Prince Hans' horse) ran back to the main city's(Arendelle) castle - .
